Kansas City, Mo. -- The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) announced that all twelve varsity programs at Johnson & Wales University were named 2016-17 NAIA Scholar Teams. The 12 teams at JWU were among the 1,677 teams nationwide to earn the distinction.
Women's soccer and women's cross country tied for the lead among Wildcat honorees with team GPAs of 3.52 this past school year. Volleyball, women's outdoor track and women's indoor track all had a 3.40 in the classroom followed by men's cross country with a 3.38. Men's soccer finished the year with a 3.32 and women's lacrosse had a 3.28. Men's outdoor track wrapped up the year with a 3.26, just ahead of men's basketball at 3.25. Men's indoor track had a 3.19 and women's basketball had a 3.18 grade point average.
To be nominated as a scholar team, a program must have a cumulative GPA for the previous year of a 3.00 or higher. This is the third consecutive year that Johnson & Wales University has had eight or more teams honored and the first time that all 12 varsity programs were recognized.
