'Cats slow start costly in loss to Tabor
Johnson & Wales finished out their weekend road trip with a 76-91 loss to Tabor College on Saturday at the Warrior Classic at Sterling College. The 'Cats and Bluejays looked comparative on paper but Tabor jumped out to an early 30-12 lead with strong rebounding under the basket and second chance points. JWU started making some headway in the closing minutes of the half but were still down 36-50 at the break.
Second half action got underway with the Wildcats continuing to cut into the Bluejays lead behind Jake Campbell. Tabor began to pull away again extending their advantage by as much as 20 points halfway through the second frame. The 'Cats were only able to knock a few points off the lead before the final buzzer and scoring 40 second half points to the Bluejays 41, but the large first half deficit kept JWU trying to play catch-up throughout the afternoon.
Campbell had a game high 27 points and a team high 8 boards. Corey Puckett had 4 assists for Johnson & Wales. Joe Penn had 15 points for Tabor while Ryan Chippeaux had 11 rebounds.
The Wildcats (2-6) will travel to California next weekend for contests against Menlo College and California Maritime Academy.
