Johnson & Wales finished their slate of Association of Independent Institutions contests with a 77-74 nail biting victory over Northern New Mexico College on Saturday. The Wildcats shot well throughout the contest from inside the arc but struggled in the first half going 3 of 12 from three point range. Johnson & Wales took a 32-26 lead into the break despite just one free throw attempt in the half.
Out of the break, Johnson & Wales continued to have the hot hand with Corey Puckett and Geoffrey Todd lighting it up from beyond the arc and Jake Campbell driving to the basket at almost every chance. Under the basket, Cody Derner was full of heart as he battled for each rebound, bringing down 10 for the night. The 'Cats were more selective with three point shooting in the half and connected on 4 of 4 while going 9 of 15 from the charity stripe. The Wildcats left Espanola with 77-74 conference win.
Campbell led all scoreres with 18 points with Kahler Grandbouche and Puckett each adding 14 each. Derner finished the night with 10 rebounds and 12 points for the 'Cats. Christian Barraza had 14 points for the Eagles as Demetrio Wade and Tevin Caldwell each had 7 rebounds.
Johnson & Wales will close out their season with a road game at Colorado College on Wednesday night at 7pm. The Tigers left the Wildcat Center with a 73-70 win over JWU in early December that the team will try to avenge at the El Pomar Center.
