The Wildcats opened a big week of games on Monday evening with a road contest at University of Colorado - Colorado Springs.
In the opening minutes, the two sides traded baskets that kept it a back and forth contest. The Mountain Lions looked to build a small lead after three minutes but Johnson & Wales cut their way back from a five point deficit to tying the game 15-15 at the 14 minute mark. UCCS went back up by six but the Wildcats pushed their way back in to trail by three. UCCS found some momentum to build their lead to 14 points with just under five minutes to play. A small run by the Wildcats capped off by a pair of free throw by Cole Moore (Albuquerque, N.M.) cut the Mountain Lions lead to just seven points with three minutes to play in the period. The 'Cats maintained the seven point difference, trailing 36-43 at the break.
In the second half, the Mountain Lions came out of the gates with the momentum to push their lead up to 21 after the first seven minutes. The 'Cats tried to make in-roads but each time they would make up some ground, UCCS would stop the run and start to pull away again. JWU couldn't counter the hot start that the Mountain Lions had in the first few minutes of the period as they fell 68-95.
Andrew Romero III (Northglenn, Colo.) led all players with 27 points for Johnson & Wales while Moore and Jontrell Herman (Duck Hill, Miss.) add 11 points each. Romero and King Grant-Perry (Cleveland, Ohio) each had three rebounds for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats will head across town on Wednesday for a 7pm contest at Regis University.
