The Wildcats headed to Las Vegas, New Mexico on Friday for a post-Thanksgiving matchup with New Mexico Highlands University.
The hosts got on the board early and jumped out to a 10-0 lead before a pair of free throws by King Grant-Perry (Cleveland, Ohio) got the 'Cats on the board. The Cowboys maintained their lead before a run by Johnson & Wales allowed the Wildcats to come within four points. The 'Cats kept themselves within a possession or two before a jumpshot by Jontrell Herman (Duck Hill, Miss.) cut the deficit to one point at the 5:11 mark. A late push by NMHU over the final four minutes allowed New Mexico Highlands to go into the break up 37-28.
The second half had the 'Cats offense start slow while New Mexico Highlands were able to hit some of their early attempts and extend their lead. The 'Cats did their best to make small runs but each time NMHU countered with one of their own to keep the game a double-digit difference. The Cowboys pushed their lead up to 30 points with just five minutes to play in the game. The Wildcats couldn't make up the difference with a late run as New Mexico Highlands held them off for the 91-57 victory.
Herman and Andrew Romero III (Northglenn, Colo.) each had 16 points for the Wildcats and Bryson Sharpley (Westminster, Colo.) brought down a team high six rebounds. Johnson & Wales was held to just .446 shooting in the game. Nmamdi Okoro led NMHU with 30 points off the bench and added 10 rebounds.
Johnson & Wales will head to Fort Lewis College on Saturday for a 3:00pm meeting with the Skyhawks.
