The Wildcats opened their home slate on Thursday with a 104-85 win over Oglala Lakota College.
The visitors opened the game on a 5-0 run to capture the early momentum. The 'Cats regrouped and took a 6-5 advantage just over a minute later. The back and forth action continued through much of the first half. Both offenses hit a bit of a lull late but quickly shook it off and continued to battle. The Wildcats broke out of the funk first and pushed their lead up to double-digits. The Bravehearts cut the lead down to single digits with under four minutes to play but the 'Cats made a late push to take the 50-34 lead into the break.
Throughout the second half the two teams relied on big shots as they traded scoring opportunities. Each time that the Bravehearts would cut the lead down to single digits, the Wildcats would regain their momentum and push their lead back up. Midway through the second half, Oglala Lakota hit another roadblock offensively and the 'Cats took advantage extending their lead to 18. The Bravehearts made a late push but the 'Cats held off the run to take the 104-85 win and get their home opening victory.
Andrew Romero III (Northglenn, Colo.) led all players with 27 points and Jontrell Herman (Duck Hill, Miss.) added 19. Romero, Bryson Sharpley (Westminster, Colo.) and King Grant-Perry (Cleveland, Ohio) all had double-digit rebounds with 12, 10, 10 respectively. Herman dished out seven assists. Shilo Tallman led Oglala Lakota with 22 points and Darrell Looks Twice had seven rebounds.
JWU and Oglala Lakota will face off again on Friday night at 7pm in the Wildcat Center.
