Late goals not enough for JWU

Late goals not enough for JWU

Johnson & Wales closed out their Texas roadtrip on Friday night with a game under the lights at Southwestern University.

The two teams traded possessions early with Wiley Cates (Montclair, N.J.) making a stop on the first shot he faced on the night. The Pirates got on the board at 10:28 with a goal from Jacob Hamilton. Southwestern found momentum after that first goal to put up a 10-0 lead through the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Pirates maintained their offensive output and pushed their lead up to 17-0 at the end of the first half. Cates made some timely saves to limit the opportunities for Southwestern in the half.

In the third, the Wildcat's defense was able to limit the chances for the Pirates and Deshaunte Longley (Bronx, N.Y.) put JWU on the board with 2:58 left in the quarter, taking a pass from Joshua Williamson (Horseheads, N.Y.) and put it past the SU goalie. Coleton Threlkeld (Cypress, Texas) opened the scoring in the fourth with an assist from Williamson and beating SU's Spencer Au. Threlkeld added his second of the game with 1:46 to play. The late goals weren't enough for Johnson & Wales as they fell 24-3 on the road.

Cates had 17 saves and 10 ground balls for Johnson & Wales and Threlkeld had three shots on goal.

Johnson & Wales will travel to Columbia College next weekend to face the Cougars.
