JWU drops season finale on Sunday

JWU drops season finale on Sunday

Johnson & Wales hosted Whittier College in their season finale on Sunday afternoon at Aurora Sports Park.

The visiting Poets got on the board first in the opening minute as Cooper Champagne put one past JWU's Wiley Cates (Montclair, N.J.). The lead was short-lived though as Coleton Threlkeld (Cypress, Texas) found the equalizer at 10:30, taking a pass from Malachi Cunningham (Denver, Colo.) and putting it past Whittier. The Poets quickly extended their lead to 4-1 midway through the opening quarter as they looked to put their stamp on the pace of the match. At the end of the first, WC led 9-1. In the second quarter the Poets continued to pepper the Wildcats with shots but Cates and the defense stepped up to limit their opportunities by forcing off target attempts. At the end of the first half, Johnson & Wales trailed 18-1.

At halftime, the 'Cats recognized their seniors. Honored at halftime were Joshua Benton (Westminster, Colo.), CunninghamJonathan MacCord (Franklin, Tenn.) and Jean-Sebastien Vila-Camacho (Fort Worth, Texas).

In the second half, the Wildcats stepped up their defense again as they continued to slow the Poet's offense. An attempt by Deshaunte Longley (Bronx, N.Y.) was saved by WC's Austin Mann just before the end of the third. The Poets rode the big first half to a 27-1 win over the Wildcats in JWU's season finale.

Threlkeld had a team high four ground balls for Johnson & Wales and both Threlkeld and Cates made seven saves each in goal for the 'Cats.
