The 'Cats faced Marian University (Wisc.) on Saturday afternoon to close out the 2018 Briton Invitational.
Johnson & Wales looked to test Marian's Ian Chacon early with an attempt by Oscar Elias (Lake Elsinor, Calif.) in the 7th minute but the Sabre's keeper made the stop. Emad Mohammed (Darfur, Sudan) took his chance at Chacon, but he again came up with the save in the 19th minute. Late attempts by both teams went wide of frame as the opening goal continued to elude both teams for the remainder of the first half.
In the second, Alexis Araiza (Dallas, Texas) was called into action in the 49th minute, saving an attempt by Marian's Juan Herrera. Elias peppered Chacon with shots in the 53rd and 54th minutes but the Sabre's goalkeeper continued to get the stops needed to keep the clean sheet going. A late attempt by Kyler Fowkes (Arvada, Colo.) in the 88th minute was saved, sending the game into overtime.
JWU saw early attempts in the first overtime period from Ali Mohamed (Aurora, Colo.), Elias, and Logan Moore (Aurora, Colo.) but their shots were off target to keep the game going. Kyle Hernandez (Aurora, Colo.) almost had the game winner in the 97th minute but Chacon was able to get the stop. Elias finally broke through on this fifth attempt of the game to score the game winner 8:09 into overtime, taking a pass from Lemi Abera (Denver, Colo.) and putting it past Chacon.
Elias led all players with five shots on goal and picked up his second goal of the season in the win. Araiza made the save on the only on-target attempt he faced.
Johnson & Wales open SCAC play next weekend when they travel to Texas to face University of Dallas on Friday and Austin College on Sunday. They'll open their home slate on September 11 against Colorado College at 6:00pm at Aurora Sports Park.
