Lindenwood sweeps Wildcats in weekend conference play
The Wildcats finished their spring break going 0-2 at #2 Lindenwood University this past weekend. The 'Cats finished the weekend 2-2 after wins at Hannibal-LaGrange on Thursday and Friday.
On Saturday morning, the Wildcats came out slow and let Lindenwood guide the action of first and second sets. The third set saw JWU become more competitive and pushing the Lions but came up short, dropping the match 3-0 (19-25, 18-25, 24-26). Chris Schardt had a team high 13 kills and Mike Sauro added 29 assists. Taylor Martin-Funk had seven digs for the 'Cats.
Sunday afternoon the Wildcats looked like a more prepared team cutting a Lindenwood lead early in the first set to 0 before a scoring run by the Lions but the game in the favor. In the second set, Johnson & Wales played a stronger game but couldn't overcome another Lindenwood run. The final set was competitive as both sides battled for every point but in the end Lindenwood was able to hold on longer and take the win and sweep. Schardt had eight kills to lead Johnson & Wales. Komakana Fernandez and Martin-Funk added another seven and six respectively. Ryan Schroerlucke had 12 digs for the 'Cats and Mike Sauro set 26 assists.
The Wildcats (13-5, 5-3) slid to #7 in the latest NAIA National Poll with the losses, but will host #6 Graceland University and #4 St. Ambrose University in matches this weekend and hope to use their mile high advantage in their favor.
