The Wildcats swept the Graceland University Yellowjackets with their 3-2 (19-25, 23-25, 25-20, 25-23, 15-11) come from behind win on Sunday morning at the Colorado Convention Center. The Wildcats took the 3-0 win over the Yellowjackets last night on the 'Cats home court.
Graceland opened the match looking like a different team from the previous night as they had a .345 attacking percentage and forced six errors on the Wildcats. The Yellowjackets used a string of points late in the set to take the 25-19 win and open the contest with the 1-0 lead.
In the second set, Johnson & Wales had an early lead and a point run to make the score 16-13 but Graceland quickly shut down the Wildcat's run and overcame the deficit to take the 25-23 set win setting Johnson & Wales back 0-2.
In the middle frame, the Wildcats became a resilient squad and jetted out to a 16-9 lead before the Yellowjackets showed some offense. Graceland tried to make a comeback, but couldn't overcome the early deficit and dropped the third set 20-25.
During the fourth set Graceland looked like they were poised to take the win with the early lead, but mental mistakes derailed the squad and Mike Sauro had an incredible performance late in the set to propel JWU to the 25-23 win and push the match into a fifth set.
The final set saw both sides battle for points in the early rallies, but the Wildcats used a 5-0 run behind the serving of Komakana Fernandez to put the game decidedly in their favor and take the 15-11 win and 3-2 match victory.
Chris Schardt had 22 kills on 46 attempts to have a team high .370 attacking percentage. Fernandez had another 11 kills for the 'Cats and Taylor Martin-Funk came up with 30 defensive digs. The team had 12 blocks with Mike Sauro and Alex Beehner each having two solos.
The Wildcats will face #4 Saint Ambrose University at 7:00 PM tonight again at the Colorado Convention Center.
