Johnson & Wales stayed close through two sets but struggled in the third in a loss to Clarke University on Monday afternoon in the Wildcat Center. The Wildcats maintained a one to two point lead or trail through most of the first two sets. During the first, the Wildcats began a late rally but a surging Clarke squad kept the 'Cats at bay for the win.
The second set began much like the first with Johnson & Wales staying within reach of the Crusaders if they didn't hold the advantage, but a series of errors at the end doomed JWU as Clarke went on 6-0 and 4-0 runs to pull the game out of the Wildcats' grasp. The final set was dominated by Clarke University. The late set errors from number two carried into the third for Johnson & Wales with the Crusaders opening up a 14-3 lead. Johnson & Wales started to make some headway down the stretch but Clarke's early scoring was too much for the Wildcats to regain their position.
Freshman middle Ty Coutts led the Wildcats with .600 attacking off six kills on 10 attempts. Damon Sichler and Blake Walden had 13 and 12 assists respectively. Ryan Schroerlucke came up with 10 digs for Johnson & Wales.
The Wildcats will play their final home game of the season on Tuesday night at 7pm when they take on the Cardinal Stritch University Wolves.
