'Cats drop two at conference tournament

The Wildcats dropped their first two contests of the round-robin conference tournament. The 'Cats opened postseason action taking on #8 Hope International University in Irvine, California.

JWU got off to a slow start in the opening two sets against the Royals as they fell behind early. HIU was able to put together short scoring runs to build up a lead that the 'Cats struggled to make up. In the third set the Wildcats played strong throughout the entire set but HIU took advantage of late errors by JWU to take the match 3-0 (25-12, 25-16, 25-20).

Josh Buted (Honolulu, Hawaii) recorded 15 kills for the Wildcats and Chase Squires (Clarence Center, N.Y.) put up 23 assists for JWU.

In their second match of the day the Wildcats took on #6 Warner University. WU opened an early 11-0 lead in the first set. Johnson & Wales dropped the opening set 7-25. In the second set, the 'Cats found their way onto the scoreboard earlier but allowed the Royals to string together scoring runs to build up the advantage. Warner pushed their offense to take the middle set 25-14.

In the final set of the day, JWU held a 7-6 lead before Warner went on a seven point run to take a 13-7 lead. JWU couldn't make up the difference as WU took the last set 25-16.

Ty Coutts (Colorado Springs, Colo.) recorded four kills for Johnson & Wales. Cody Sutton (Gilbert, Ariz.) had seven digs for JWU.

The Wildcats continue play at the National Conference tournament on Saturday when they take on #10 Emmanuel and #1 Concordia Irvine.
