Wildcats drop first match of pool play

The 'Cats welcomed #1 Concordia University Irvine to the Wildcat Center for the 2014 NAIA Men's Volleyball Invitational. The two sides faced off in the fourth match of pool play with the Eagles reeling from an earlier loss to #3 seed Park University.

The Eagles put up a quick scoring run opening 12-4 against the Wildcats but JWU turned the table and rattled off six straight points as they cut the lead to 14-17 forcing CUI to call a timeout. After the timeout, the Eagles put together an 8-3 run to take the opening set 25-17.

In the second set the Eagles put up nine straight points with Kevin Fiske serving as they began with a 10-1 start. The Wildcats slowly made strides but the early deficit was too much to overcome dropping the middle set 18-25.

The final set saw Johnson & Wales struggle to play the defensive side of the ball as Concordia held an early 12-6 advantage. CUI pushed ahead for a 13-4 run to take the final set 25-10.

Ty Coutts (Colorado Springs, Colo.) recorded 7 kills for the Wildcats and a .227 attacking percentage in the match. Freshman setter Chase Squires (Clarence Center, N.Y.) had 16 assists for the 'Cats in the loss. The Eagles Parker Del Re and Naseri Tumanuvao each had seven kills on 12 attempts.

JWU will take on Park University at 12:30pm on Friday in the final match of Pool Play.
