Wildcats outlast Colorado College Tigers
Johnson & Wales University continued their good fortunes with a 77-74 win over Colorado College on Tuesday evening in the Wildcat Center. This is the first game of a home and home series between the two squads. The second game will be played at Colorado College on December 13.
CC got on the board first with a bucket by Kalli Kemling but Samantha Neal put the 'Cats ahead with a three point shot in the first minute. JWU had an early seven point advantage but back to back shot from beyond the arc put the Tigers within one before taking over a short lived lead.
Both sides fought hard for possesion of the ball forcing numerous jump balls but the Wildcats started building some consistency and began to pull away from the Tigers. Johnson & Wales built their largest lead of the half with another seven point advantage but CC chipped it down to 34-30 going into the break.
Coming out of intermission, Colorado College tried to force the 'Cats to shoot but often found themselves on the receiving end of the foul. The Wildcats had 27 free throw attempts in the second half thanks to the Tigers who were in foul trouble early in the period. JWU padded their lead to a game high of 11 before CC came roaring back to take the 64-63 advantage with just over seven minutes to play.
Johnson & Wales kept their composure and settled into the game which allowed them to take a small lead but enough to keep the Tigers at bay. Johnson & Wales finished the night with the 77-74 win despite the never back down mentality of the Tigers.
Caitlin Durkin lit up the scoreboard with 26 points. She was 8 of 14 from the floor and went 8 of 10 from the line. Victoria Huber had a team high 9 boards and Amber Salaz dished out five assists. Becky Luetjen led the Tigers with 18 points and a game high 12 rebounds.
Johnson & Wales (6-1) will host University of Saint Mary on Friday, November 18 at 7pm and Dickinson State University in their first Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) contest on Sunday, November 20 at 1pm.
