Bulldogs early second half run dooms 'Cats

Johnson & Wales closed out the women's side of their 5280 Classic with a 103-70 loss to #7 Concordia University on Friday night. The Wildcats opened the contest strong, staying with the Bulldogs despite full court pressure by CU. The Bulldogs had a short-lived run early in the half but the 'Cats squashed that and brought the game to 21-22 with 9:25 left in the period. Concordia again capitlalized on a stagnant JWU offense over the next few minutes to pull away and take a 45-40 lead into the break.

As the second half got underway, the Wildcats struggled to maintain possession early in the second half allowing Concordia to go on a 20-5 run and keeping JWU well out of contention. Midway through the period, Johnson & Wales found their momentum again and started to make some headway but the damage had already been done. JWU couldn't stage a comeback and dropped their third straight home game, falling to 9-9 on the season.

Caitlin Durkin led a foursome of Wildcat scorers in double digits with 20 points and Samantha Neal contributed another 19. Kourtney Shirley dished out 5 assists and Jasmine Culbreath brought down 6 rebounds. Amber Kistler had 22 points for the Bulldogs and Kristen Conahan had a game high 9 assists. The Wildcats will kick off 2012 as the end their five game homestand when they host the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs Mountain Lions on Tuesday, January 3 at 7pm.
