Johnson & Wales headed to Phoenix for the Arizona Christian University Classic on Friday. The 'Cats faced off against the host Firestorm in Friday evening action.
Both sides struggled to get their offense going early as ACU were the first to get on the board almost 90 seconds into the game. Andromeda Sales (Black Hawk, Colo.) put the 'Cats up on her first made basket with a three pointer at 7:32. The Firestorm put together a small run to lead 17-4 with just 2:48 to play in the opening quarter. The Wildcats added a few more points but ACU took a 26-7 lead into the start of the second quarter. The Firestorm continued to push the offensive tempo as they pushed their lead up to 23 as ACU held the 45-22 lead at halftime.
In the second half the 'Cats offense started to pickup but Arizona Christian maintained their offensive output. Each scoring run the Wildcats would make the Firestorm would counter with one of their own. The Wildcats made a late push but their early deficit proved to be too much to overcome as Arizona Christian took the 73-51 victory.
Briana Aluya (Placentia, Calif.) led the Wildcats with 16 points off the bench and had a team high eight rebounds. Sales added 13 points for JWU was was 5 of 7 from the free throw line. Courtney Christmas had 19 points for the Firestorm.
Johnson & Wales will take on Hope International University on Saturday at 12:00pm at Arizona Christian's Fultz Gymnasium.
