The Wildcats returned to action in the new year with a 74-35 win over Oglala Lakota College.
The 'Cats opened the contest on a 5-0 run and continued to build their lead, pushing it to a 13-2 advantage with 6:02 to play in the first quarter. The Bravehearts started to find some momentum but JWU kept hitting shots, taking a 25-12 lead into the second quarter. After a scoreless three and a half minutes to open the period, the two teams finally started sinking buckets and adding to their totals. JWU put together a late run in the second to extend their lead to 41-22 at the break.
In the third quarter, the Bravehearts struggled to hit their shots through the opening five minutes as Johnson & Wales maintained their momentum. The 'Cats took advantage of the stalled offense and pushed their lead up to 31 points midway through the period. JWU's defense held OLC to three points in the quarter and took a 60-25 lead into the final frame. The fourth quarter saw JWU maintain their offensive output and capture the 74-35 win.
Cara McNiff (Aurora, Colo.) led Johnson & Wales with 21 points and Brianna Aluya (Placentia, Calif.) added another 17. Salma Oros (Buckeye, Ariz.) brought down 10 rebounds for JWU. Cammi Bear Killer had 15 points for Oglala Lakota and both Samantha Weston and Dalcina Chief Eagle each had six boards.
The two teams will face eachother again on Friday at 5pm in the Wildcat Center.
