The Wildcats traveled to southern Colorado on Thursday for an afternoon contest at Adams State University.
On the opening draw, Kyra Gangemi (Elkton, Md.) took control and drove down the field to the net. She was fouled and setup a free position attempt. She scored on the attempt as the 'Cats went up 1-0 just 16 seconds into the contest. The Grizzlies scored to tie the game 1-1 at 23:19 and added a second goal two minutes later. Gangemi picked up her second goal, taking a feed from Katie Smith (Livermore, Calif.) to score for JWU. Gangemi's offense was rolling early as she added her third of the game at 17:44 to give the 'Cats a 3-2 lead.
The Grizzlies called a timeout to regroup and retooled their offense as they put together a 12-1 run before the half with Gangemi netting one more goal for Johnson & Wales.
In the second half, Smith took a pass from Gangemi and put it past the ASU keeper off the opening draw. Hanna Jo Eady (Newnan, Ga.) came up with two big saves over the next two minutes as the 'Cats defense held steady. Gangemi and Smith partnered on Gangemi's fifth and the 'Cats sixth goal overall at 22:03. Gangemi scored her sixth goal of the game at 17:12 to earn the sock trick.
Adams State held off the Wildcats for the 21-7 win.
Gangemi had a team high six goals for the Wildcats on 10 shots and had eight draw controls. Smith had two assists for JWU. Eady made five saves for Johnson & Wales.
The Wildcats will host Metro State University on Tuesday, April 11 at 3pm at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in their final home contest of the season.
