The Wildcats hosted Adams State University on Saturday afternoon to close out their home schedule for 2018.
Prior to the opening draw, the 'Cats recognized seniors Cici Orozco (Port St. Lucie, Fla.), Alex Martinez (Vista, Calif.) and Maleeya Thompson (Collingswood, N.J.). All three were honored for their contributions to the Wildcat Women's Lacrosse program.
The visiting Grizzlies tried to get their offense going early, but JWU's Madison Herbert (Berthoud, Colo.) forced the turnover from ASU's Savannah Penland in the second minute. Adams State broke through on their next trip up the field with Cera Cyester picking up her eighth of the season. The two sides traded a lot of possession throughout the first 10 minutes with Adams State scoring their third of the game just over the 10 minute mark. With 11:24 to go in the first half, Herbert made the save on a free position attempt by Cyester to continue to assert her presence. Herbert had another free position save just over a minute later. At the break, Adams State held the 10-0 advantage.
In the second half, the Grizzlies continued to control much of the offense, extending their lead to 15-0 at the midway point of the period. Ashley Guerrero (Downey, Calif.) broke through for Johnson & Wales at 14:40, netting her 19th of the season. The 'Cats weren't able to overcome the Adams State defense as they fell 18-1.
Herbert had nine ground balls and made five saves for Johnson & Wales. She also had six caused turnovers for Johnson & Wales. Katie Smith (Livermore, Calif.) finished with three draw controls for the Wildcats. Guerrero had four shots on goal for the 'Cats.
JWU will wrap up their season next weekend when they travel to University of Dallas and Southwestern University.
