Johnson & Wales closed out their first weekend of the 2018 season with a Sunday morning contest against UC Santa Cruz.
From the opening whistle, UC Santa Cruz looked to assert themselves early on the Wildcats. Katelyn Peters (Brighton, Colo.) made the save on an attempt by UCSC's Emma Wilson in the 15th minute as the Banana Slugs tried to get on the board. Peters made another save in the 21st minute to keep UCSC looking. In the 25th minute, the Banana Slugs converted a penalty kick to go up 1-0 on JWU. Peters made back to back saves just before the halftime whistle as UCSC took a 2-0 lead into the break.
UC Santa Cruz added to to their total just after the start of the second half with a goal in the 49th minute to lead 3-0. UCSC found their fourth of the game in the 63rd minute as they controlled the pace of the game. The Banana Slugs continued to test the Wildcat's defense but Johnson & Wales were able to hold them off for the remainder of the game. Natasha Martin (Las Vegas, Nev.) had her attempt in the 81st minute saved as the 'Cats were held scoreless by UC Santa Cruz.
Peters made seven saves for Johnson & Wales in the loss.
JWU will head to Texas next weekend to face University of Dallas on Friday, September 7 to open SCAC play.
