Wildcats play to double overtime draw

The Wildcats opened their final weekend of the season on Friday evening with a match against Schreiner University.

Johnson & Wales recognized their five graduating seniors prior to the opening kickoff. Asianna Harris (Las Vegas, Nev.), Yesenia Hernandez (Denver, Colo.), Kassidy McKevitt (Fort Collins, Colo.), Molly Sharples (Henderson, Nev.), and Emily Smith (Westminster, Colo.) were honored for their Wildcat careers.

JWU's Rebecca Brock (Amarillo, Texas) put SU's Jordin Toso to work in the 5th minute with Toso making the save on her attempt. The Mountaineers went up 1-0 in the 8th minute with a shot up the middle. Maysen Whitney (Billings, Mont.) forced Toso to make a stop on her shot after the restart. Katelyn Peters (Brighton, Colo.) made the save on an attempt by Dani Loeblein in the 14th minute to keep it a one goal game. The Mountaineers added a second goal in the 30th minute as they continued to control the tempo in the first half. Sharples sent a shot high in the 43rd minute as Schreiner took a 2-09 lead into the break.

JWU picked up their pressure in the second half with three early attempts in the opening 10 minutes but the Mountaineer's defense got the stops. Katherine Owings (St. Louis, Mo.) headed in a corner kick from Samantha Roybal (Littleton, Colo.) to get JWU on the board in the 57th minute. In the 69th minute, Hernandez sent a pass up the right side to Brock who put it past Toso to tie the match 2-2. Each side looked for the go-ahead goal but both keepers got the stops in the final 25 minutes to send the game into extra time.

Peters got the stop on an attempt by Marissa Wheeler in the 97th minute and Hernandez saw her 98th minute shot saved to force a second overtime period. Neither squad were able to put a shot on frame in the final 10 minutes as the game officially ended in a draw.

Natasha Martin (Las Vegas, Nev.) led Johnson & Wales with eight attempts and Brock had three shots on goal. Peters had three saves for Johnson & Wales.

Johnson & Wales will host #17 Trinity on Sunday at 2pm at Aurora Sports Park to close out their 2018 season.
