'Cats come up short at Menlo tournament

The Wildcats headed West to California for a weekend tournament at Menlo College.

In the first match of the weekend, the 'Cats took on William Jessup University. The Pioneers jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the opening set the 'Cats countered to tie the set at six pointa each. A six point run by WJU allowed them to find some momentum on their way to a 25-15 opening set victory. In the second set, WJU used short scoring bursts to pull away from Johnson & Wales and take the 25-13 win. The third set had the Wildcats with an early lead but the Pioneers rallied to shut down the 'Cats offense and take the 25-15 win.

Katie Malachinski (Stevensville, Mont.) had eight kills for Johnson & Wales in the loss.

In the second match of the day, the Wildcats face the University of Providence out of Great Falls, Montana. The Argos lead early but the 'Cats clawed their way back to within two points. The Argos put together short scoring runs to power their way to a 25-13 opening set win. In the second set, UP had the momentum throughout the set and forged ahead for the 25-14 win. The third set had the Argos jump out to an 8-1 lead. They maintained their momentum to take a 25-10 win and sweep the match 3-0.

Erin Sosnowchik (Omaha, Neb.) had 10 digs for Johnson & Wales.

On Saturday, the Wildcats will take on Westmont College and San Diego Christian on day two of the Menlo Invitational.
