Wildcats split Friday contests

The Wildcats headed to Point Lookout, Missouri this weekend for the Chick-fil-A tournament hosted by College of the Ozarks.

In the first match of the day, the Wildcats took on Hannibal-LaGrange University. In the opening set, the 'Cats led 4-1 early but the Trojans rallied to tie the set 5-5. The back and forth continued throughout the set with JWU finding a late run to take the 25-22 win. The second set saw JWU jump out front to a 7-2 advantage. Hannibal-LaGrange tried to make a push to fight their way back in but Johnson & Wales held them off for the 25-16 win. The third set had the Trojans fight back from an early deficit to tie the set 11-11. The 'Cats regrouped and powered their way to the 25-19 victory to sweep the match 3-0.

Katie Malachinski (Stevensville, Mont.) had a career match with 17 kills and hit .686 in the contest. She also added 10 digs for Johnson & Wales in the win.

The second match of the day had the Wildcats taking on tournament hosts College of the Ozarks (RV) in a conference match between the two programs. The Bobcats used a 10 point run in the opening set to pull away early on their way to the 25-10 win. In the second, after a back and forth start, College of the Ozarks used small scoring runs to get the 25-14 victory. The 'Cats could only break up scoring runs late in their third set as the Bobcat's used their momentum to power their way to the 25-16 win.

Erin Sosnowchik (Omaha, Neb.) led Johnson & Wales with nine kills and Ashlee Ruehs (Phoenix, Ariz.) had 14 assists.

The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday for day two of College of the Ozark's Chick-fil-a Tournament.
