JWU drops road finale

Johnson & Wales closed out their road schedule with a Sunday morning match against Schreiner University.

In the first set the Mountaineers held an early 9-4 advantage to start to build some distance. With their early lead, Schreiner used the start to power their way to the 25-13 opening set victory. The two sides began the second set on a more balanced tone, trading early points. The Wildcats broke up a 6-6 tie to lead 10-6 and start to build some momentum. The Mountaineers added a few more points late, but the Wildcats maintained their offense and took the second set 25-16. JWU began the third with a 5-1 lead to continue to holding the momentum. The Wildcats used their early lead to keep the pressure on Schreiner and force them into errors on their way to the 25-14 win.

The fourth set went back and forth through the opening minutes with Schreiner holding the small lead midway through the set. The Mountaineers put together a late push to capture the 25-17 victory and force a fifth set. In the final set of the game, the two sides traded points early with neither team allowing the other to get much of an advantage. Schreiner held the 8-6 lead as the two squads traded sides. The back and forth continued with both teams knotted at 14. Schreiner found the final two points to grab with 16-14 win and the 3-2 victory.

Brooke Paxton (Greeley, Colo.) had 15 kills for Johnson & Wales and hit .295 in the match. Paxton had a game high 21 digs for the Wildcats and Emmy Gazaway (Louisville, Colo.) had 28 assists for JWU.

The Wildcats return home for the final weekend of the season. JWU hosts University of Dallas on Friday, October 26 at 6pm in the Wildcat Center.
