JWU Denver successfully completes first year of NCAA provisional membership process

DENVER –Johnson & Wales University has successfully completed the first provisional year of its NCAA Division III membership process, the NCAA Division III Membership Committee informed University President Dr. Richard Wiscott on Thursday.

In making the transition from NAIA to NCAA DIII, JWU Denver has now successfully completed its Exploratory Year (2017-18) and first provisional year (2018-19).

Starting Sept. 1, 2019, the Wildcats will officially begin Year 2 of what is traditionally a five-year process.

"This is very exciting news and a great day for JWU Denver Athletics," athletic director Tom Byrnes said. "Many, many people contributed to this process. In particular, I'd like to thank President Richard Wiscott for the 100% support of the campus and the university. I'd also like to thank Associate Director of Athletics Mike Gallegos, whose contributions are too numerous to count, and they're all certainly significant."

JWU Denver is not eligible for NCAA postseason championships until it is granted full membership status; however, as a provisional member it is still expected to comply with Division III legislation throughout the provisional process, including:

  • Attendance at special provisional/reclassifying member programming at the NCAA Convention
  • Attendance at the NCAA Regional Rules Seminar
  • Submission of an Annual Report of the institution's progress, triumphs and challenges as they go through the membership process

Additionally, the first year of the provisional process includes a visit to the institution by a delegation from the DIII Membership Committee in the fall, along with the submission of the Institutional Self-Study Guide (ISSG) at the end of the academic year.
