DENVER – On Wednesday Mary Baldwin University announced the hiring of Tom Byrnes as its next director of athletics. Byrnes has served as the director of athletics for Johnson & Wales University since March 2017. Byrnes is expected to start his new position at the Division III institution in Stanton, VA, on Monday, Aug. 12.
During his 2 ½ years leading the JWU Denver athletic department, Byrnes oversaw a significant increase in student-athlete recruitment, helped successfully guide the university through the first two years of the NCAA Division III exploratory and provisional membership process and significantly increased the department's staff. Byrnes also added two varsity sports (men's and women's golf) and initiated a student-athlete advisory committee (SAAC).
JWU Denver has increased varsity student-athlete rosters from 115 in 13 sports in 2017-18 to approximately 180 student-athletes for 15 sports this year. In each of the last two years, the Wildcats' coaching staff has topped the campus record for incoming athletic recruits, including approximately 80 new student-athletes for the 2019-20 year.
"I'm so thankful for my time here in Denver. I owe a big thanks to President Richard Wiscott and the rest of the Denver Leadership Team for embracing me from Day 1," Byrnes said. "I'm thrilled to start my new position at Mary Baldwin but will certainly miss being a Wildcat."
A national search to find the next athletic director at JWU Denver will begin promptly. Dr. Scott Lyons, dean of students, will serve as interim director of athletics.
