Tom Byrnes began his tenure as Director of Athletics at Johnson & Wales University on March 13, 2017.
Byrnes joins Wildcat Athletics from the Capital Athletic Conference, where he served as Commissioner since 2008. Under his leadership, the CAC went through its biggest transition as they saw three teams exit the conference and welcomed four new institutions over a three-year span. As Commissioner, Byrnes helped the conference become more equitable for their 21 championship sports as well as began the conference's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). The CAC added Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field as championship sports in 2012 under Byrnes's guidance.
He joined the CAC from California University of Pennsylvania where he served as Sports Information Director for the Vulcans. He oversaw media relations, statistician and website manager for the Vulcans. Prior to California University of Pennsylvania, he was at the Patriot League where he served as Assistant Executive Director/Media Relations. He was responsible for media coverage for all 23 championship sports but served as the primary contact for football, men's basketball, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's lacrosse and golf.
Byrnes began his career at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa., where he rose from the institutions first full-time sports information director to the Assistant Athletic Director.
Byrnes has been an official for soccer, basketball and softball for over 30 years at the collegiate and scholastic level. He has been a member of CoSIDA and served on the Capital One Academic All-America Committee since 1992.
Byrnes is married to Coreena and has a son Nathan and daughter Lauren.
