Johnson & Wales University faced off against the California Maritime Academy (CSUM) Keelhaulers on day two of the Lamont Ramsey Classic hosted by Menlo College. The 'Cats found themselves on the board first but the Keelhaulers quickly wiped away JWU's lead and went on an 18-2 run to keep the Wildcats fighting to stay in the game. Johnson & Wales started to find their shot and Eric Gardzina became a force under the basket doing whatever it took to gain possession of missed shots. JWU shot .375 from the floor in the first half and went into the break down 27-37.
Second half action got underway with the 'Cats going on a 13-4 run to bring the game to within one point of the Keelhaulers. CSUM again extended their lead but JWU cut that away sending the game into overtime tied at 63. The first period of extra time began with Cal Maritime opening a four point lead but Johnson & Wales erased that to tie the game at 68. The Keelhaulers again extended the game to a five point advantage but JWU came clawing back. With 1.9 seconds left to play in the overtime, a foul on Gardzina sent him to the line to keep JWU in the game. Gardzina hit both buckets from the charity stripe to tie the contest for the second time in OT and send the game into another extra period.
The final period of extra time saw JWU take the game into their hands and build a nine point lead. The Keelhaulers attempted a last minute come back but came up short leaving Johnson & Wales to take the 91-85 win. Gardzina had a career high 25 points and 22 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. Jake Campbell finished with a game high 26 points while Chris O'Neal dished out a career high 9 assists.
Johnson & Wales (3-7, 0-1) will travel to Colorado Christian University on Tuesday to face off against the Cougars.
