Wildcats rally to late, fall to Menlo

Johnson & Wales University traveled to California this weekend to take part in the Lamont Ramsey Classic hosted by Menlo College. The 'Cats opened the Classic matched up against the host Oaks. Menlo College opened up a wide margin early in the contest and sent JWU to look to make up some ground. By the end of the first half, Menlo had built a 39-18 lead mostly due to Johnson & Wales' .250 shooting in the period and going 5 of 13 from the free throw line.

In the second half the Oaks started to extend their lead but the 'Cats started to find their shot and build momentum. The Wildcat squad fared better with their shooting going for .600 from the floor and 5 of 8 from the charity stripe. In the closing seconds, JWU was forced to foul the Oaks to try and stop the clock and give themselves possession of the ball, but Menlo was successful from the line to keep the game out of reach from Johnson & Wales. The final buzzer sounded with Menlo on top 73-70.

Jake Campbell led four starters in double figures with 16 points while Eric Gardzina had 16 boards alongside his 15 points. Tim Tatum had a game high 20 points for the Oaks and also added 9 rebounds. JWU will play California Martime Academy on Saturday on day two of the Lamont Ramsey Classic.
