Tigers surge past Johnson & Wales

The Wildcats kicked off their 2016-17 season on Friday night when they hosted Doane University.

The visiting Tigers opened the game with a 6-0 run to set the tone early. Zach Jones (Fort Collins, Colo.) got the 'Cats on the board with a free throw at 17:25. Jones followed it up with a three pointer on the Wildcat's next trip down the court. Andrew Romero III (Northglenn, Colo.) tied the game 6-6 with a layup at 16:32. 

The Tigers went up 19-11 on Johnson & Wales midway through the half. The 'Cats rallied to come within three points at 8:19. Doane's offense continued to dominate as they stretched their lead to double digits. The 'Cats chipped away but a late surge by the Tigers gave them a 43-31 lead at the half.

The Tigers started the second half strong, extending their lead to 58-39 in the first few minutes of the period. The Wildcats tried to chip away but the Tigers continued to hit their shots down the stretch. Doane held on for the 91-59 win to spoil the 'Cats opening night.

Romero had 14 points for Johnson & Wales and Jontrell Herman (Duck Hill, Miss.) add 10. Romero and Aaron Stone (Elizabeth, Colo.) each had six rebounds for the Wildcats. Chase Stone had 17 points off the bench for the Tigers and Nate Kuhl had a game high seven rebounds.

The Wildcats will wrap up the weekend on Saturday night when they host Concordia University.
