The Wildcats traveled from Flagstaff to Prescott on Sunday for an afternoon contest at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
The 'Cats got on the board first but the host Eagles added a bucket on their next possession to get the game going offensively. The two teams traded buckets with neither building much of an advantage. Each time that one side would put together a small scoring run the other would counter and fight their way back in. Embry-Riddle had a small scoring surge to extend their lead to eight points late in the first half.
Johnson & Wales put together a small run to cut the deficit but the Eagles took a 43-39 lead into the break.
In the second half, the two teams continued the back and forth action with Johnson & Wales tying the game 51-51 off a Bryson Sharpley (Westminster, Colo.) jumper. Jontrell Herman (Duck Hill, Miss.) and Justin Lee (Niwot, Colo.) gave JWU a 7-0 run to push JWU's lead to 58-51. The Eagles did their best to rally but JWU maintained their momentum and held off ERAU for the 91-80 victory to go 3-0 on the weekend.
Herman led all players with 34 points and Andrew Romero III (Northglenn, Colo.) finished with 16 points and a game high nine rebounds. Nick Johnson had 21 points and seven rebounds for ERAU.
The Wildcats will return to Denver to host Dine College on Friday and Saturday night at 7pm each day.
