Strong start not enough for Wildcats

Strong start not enough for Wildcats

The Wildcats continued Association of Independent Institutions play on Friday when they took on College of the Ozarks in Espanola, New Mexico.

After a back and forth start to the game, the Wildcats held the 11-9 advantage after the first five minutes of play. JWU surged ahead over the next few minutes to go up 17-11 but the Bobcats came back to take the 18-17 lead with 10:50 in the first half. JWU made short scoring runs to go up by six points with 6:50 to go but College of the Ozarks wouldn't back down. The Bobcats cut the deficit to one possession and then hit a three pointer just before the buzzer to take a 33-32 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the Bobcats came out of the break with the momentum and surged ahead to a 42-34 lead. JWU put together another run to cut the lead to four points midway through the second half. Again the Bobcats had an answer though and maintained their offensive rhythm. College of the Ozarks pushed their lead up to 15 with five minutes to play.

Johnson & Wales made a late push but couldn't overcome the strong start to the second period from the Bobcats and fell 63-78.

Jontrell Herman (Duck Hill, Miss.) led all players with 23 points and both Herman and Justin Lee (Longmont, Colo.) had five rebounds each. Heath Carmichael led CofO with 19 points and Kiefer Starbird brought down nine boards.

The 'Cats will take on Central Christian College on Saturday at 3pm MT in Northern New Mexico's A.I.I. Classic.
