The Wildcats opened their 2017-18 campaign on Thursday night in Greeley as they took on NCAA Division I's University of Northern Colorado.
The opening minutes of the contest was a back and forth affair as the 'Cats traded buckets with the Bears. Northern Colorado led by five points just four minutes into the contest by JWU cut the difference to three points. Each time that Northern Colorado would try to build some distance, the Wildcats would make up ground and pull with a bucket or two. UNC started to pull away late in the first half as they extended their lead to 13 points with just over six minutes left in the period. Another push by the 'Cats allowed them to come within eight but Northern Colorado again pulled ahead to take a 55-38 lead into the break.
The Bears opened the second period with some offensive momentum and continued to build up their lead. The Wildcats saw their offense stall as UNC went ahead by 28 points midway through the second period. The Wildcats made a late run in the final 10 minutes and put up 24 points in the final six minutes. Northern Colorado held off JWU's push to take the 106-81 victory.
Andrew Romero III (Northglenn, Colo.) led all players with 34 points in the contest and was 14 of 17 from the floor. Jontrell Herman (Duck Hill, Miss.) added 30 points for Johnson & Wales and was 3 for 3 from beyond the arc. Herman led the 'Cats with eight rebounds. Anthony Johnson had 23 points for the Bears and Roberto Vercellino had seven rebounds.
The Wildcats will head to Adams State University on Saturday night for a 7pm contest against the Grizzlies.
