Johnson & Wales wrapped up the weekend with a 97-90 overtime win over Haskell Indian Nations University.
The 'Cats began the game shooting early with a 7-2 lead through the opening two minutes of play. The Wildcats continued to push the tempo of the contest at each chance they got. After two early timeouts, Haskell started to fight their way back into the game. HINU cut the 'Cats lead down to 23-22 with 9:04 left in the period. Haskell got their first lead of the game at 8:09 as they started to impose their game. After taking the lead, HINU started to build up their lead. JWU trailed 40-47 at the break.
In the second half the Indians tried to maintain their momentum but Johnson & Wales cut the deficit to four points off a layup from Jontrell Herman (Duck Hill, Miss.). Haskell again pushed their lead back up but the 'Cats again brought it back down to a manageable amount. Johnson & Wales trailed 75-68 with 4:14 left in the game. The 'Cats fought back with timely shooting to tie the game 79-79 off a pair of free throws from Herman. HINU went back up 81-79 with 38 seconds left. A layup by Andrew Romero III (Northglenn, Colo.) with 16 seconds tied the game 81-81 and forced overtime for the second night in a row for JWU.
After breaking up an 84-84 tie to begin the extra frame, Romero and Herman took over the game offensively for Johnson & Wales and drove up the Wildcat's lead. Haskell added a few buckets late but it wasn't enough as Johnson & Wales captured the 97-90 overtime win for their second straight extra-time victory in as many nights.
Romero led all players with 38 points and had nine rebounds for JWU. Herman had 27 points and eight rebounds for the 'Cats while dishing out four assists. Jimell Tate had 20 points off the bench for Haskell and brought down five boards.
JWU will host Northern New Mexico College next weekend at 7pm on Friday and 3pm on Saturday to wrap up the regular season.
