The Wildcats began their final weekend of the regular season with a 72-60 win over Northern New Mexico College on Friday night.
The visiting Eagles got out to an early 6-2 lead over Johnson & Wales through the opening two and a half minutes of play. The 'Cats regrouped and quickly put themselves back into the game. Midway through the first period, Northern New Mexico put together a run to lead 22-11 with 8:52 left in the first half. After a Wildcat timeout, the 'Cats came running back. JWU cut the deficit to five points just over five minutes later. The Wildcats continued to fight and jumped out in front 29-28 after a layup by Jontrell Herman (Duck Hill, Miss.) with 10 seconds left in the half. A last second attempt fell short and the Wildcats took a one point lead into the break.
Both teams came out firing to start the second half with the two sides breaking ties and seeing their small leads short-lived in the first 10 minutes. After breaking up a 48-48 tie off a Herman layup, the 'Cats started to feel some momentum and began to pull away. The 'Cats continued to push their lead up and extended their advantage to double-digits with under five minutes to play. Northern New Mexico tried to put together a late run, but Johnson & Wales shut it down just as quickly as it started and captured the 72-60 victory.
Andrew Romero III (Northglenn, Colo.) led Johnson & Wales with 21 points and Herman added 20. Jonny Pomerleau (Loveland, Colo.) led the 'Cats with seven rebounds and Herman dished out four assists. Bryce Simmons had 20 points for Northern New Mexico and three different Eagles players had five rebounds.
