COLORADO SPRINGS – Three games, three 30-point performances for Johnson & Wales guard Jontrell Herman. Three wins for the Wildcats, too.
The electric senior scored 25 of his game-high 31 points in the first half to lead the JWU to a 92-82 victory over George Fox on Friday at the Rocky Mountain Thanksgiving Classic.
Herman (Duck Hill, Miss.) was 11-of-16 from the floor, including 4-of-5 from 3, and added eight rebounds, seven assists and two steals to help JWU start the season 3-0 for the first time since its inaugural 2004-05 campaign. The reigning SCAC player of the week got plenty of help as all five Wildcat starters scored in double figures.
Andrew Romero III totaled 19 points and seven rebounds, King Grant-Perry had a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards, Jordan Miles finished with 12 points and five rebounds and Bailey Stephens added 14 points for the Wildcats, who took a 47-30 halftime lead before withstanding a George Fox (2-2) second-half comeback.
"We're all close with each other. Coach always says 'Bring intensity,' so we always want to come out every game and bring intensity and start the game off with our defense, because that will lead to great offense," Romero said. "That's what let us get out to a good start this evening."
The Wildcats surpassed the 90-point mark for the second time in three contests this season, shooting a season-best 50.0 percent from the field (33-of-66). Their 21 assists were also a season best, as were their four blocks, one each by Grant-Perry (Cleveland, Ohio), Miles (Memphis, Tenn.), Stephens (Flagstaff, Ariz.) and Taka Hall (San Marcos, Calif.).
