DENVER – For the second time in five weeks this season, Johnson & Wales University guard Jontrell Herman has been named the SCAC Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.
The senior earned the recognition for games played Monday, Dec. 3 through Sunday, Dec. 9, during which the Wildcats (8-2) went 3-1 and Herman (Duck Hill, Miss.) averaged 25.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 5.3 steals.
Herman had two double-doubles in the four games, including a 21-point, 11-rebound, 8-steal effort in a win over Colorado College in the Wildcats' first-ever SCAC conference game on Dec. 4. Two days later, the senior guard recorded his fourth 30-point game of the season in a victory over Caltech, making 4-of-6 attempts from the 3-point line and 8-of-10 free throws. The only other player in the SCAC with multiple 30-point games this season is teammate Andrew Romero III with two.
The Castle View High School (Colo.) product then scored 26 points in Saturday's loss at Whittier, surpassing 1,500 career points with the Wildcats. Romero III is the only other player in program history to reach the milestone, eclipsing the total during a win over George Fox on Nov. 23.
For the season, Herman has a slight edge over Romero III as the league's leading scorer, 25.4 ppg to 24.5 ppg. Herman also ranks second in the SCAC in rebounding (8.0), second in assists (4.6), first in steals (4.0), first in 3-pointers made (3.1 per game) and second in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.3).
This is the third SCAC Player of the Week honor for JWU Denver men's basketball this season. Herman was selected for Week 2 and Romero III was honored for Week 3.
After playing three road games in three days this past weekend, Quintin Grogan's Wildcats play an exhibition Tuesday at Northern Colorado before returning to conference play Friday at Texas-Lutheran and Saturday at Southwestern.
