DENVER – After leading the Johnson & Wales men's basketball team to one of the best seasons in program history, seniors Andrew Romero III and Jontrell Herman earned all-conference recognition by the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
The conference announced Saturday that Romero III earned a spot on the All-SCAC First Team while Herman was selected to the Second Team. Herman was also named the SCAC Defensive Player of the Year after leading the league in steals (2.8) and defensive rebounds (5.4) for a JWU team that forced the most turnovers in the SCAC.
Romero III, a player of the year candidate, ranked among the top 15 in all but two individual offensive categories (11-of-13). He finished second all-time in SCAC single-season history in both total points scored (607) and scoring average (24.3). The 2,000-career point scorer also ranked fifth in the league in rebounding (6.9), seventh in assists (3.2), second in steals (2.3) and sixth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.3).
Herman ranked 12th or better in the SCAC in all 13 individual offensive categories. The senior also led the league in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.2) and was second in scoring (21.0) and assists (3.9). The Duck, Hill, Mississippi native had six 30-point performances, including a 35-point effort in a win over Austin on Feb. 8, the highest individual scoring game in SCAC play this season.
Both Romero III and Herman were named the SCAC Player of the Week twice. The two seniors also were on two all-tournament teams and each received national recognition, Herman landing on the D3Hoops.com Team of the Week on Nov. 20 and Romero III named the DIII National Player of the Week on Feb. 5 by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association.
