Men's basketball topped by Denver in exhibition

DENVER - Ahead of Friday's 2019-20 season opener at Pacific Lutheran, the Johnson & Wales University men's basketball team tuned up against in-state Division I foe Denver University on Friday at Hamilton Gymnasium. 

The host Pioneers posted the 85-51 victory. 

Freshman Andray Thomas Jr. paced JWU Denver with 17 points, six rebounds and three steals. Sophomore Charles Young finished with five points and five assists while freshman Brandon Romero tallied six points and two rebounds. 

A 3-pointer by Romero gave the visiting Wildcats a 3-0 lead two minutes in. Thomas then added another three a few possessions to keep JWU in the lead before a 3 by DU's Jase Townsend put the Pioneers ahead. 

DU went on to lead 39-28 at halftime and out-rebounded JWU 43-32. Denver also led in points in the paint (50-14) and held the Wildcats to 19-67 (28.4 percent) shooting.
