DENVER - The Johnson & Wales University men's basketball team was picked to finished 10th in the SCAC Men's Basketball Preseason Coaches' Poll, released Wednesday by the conference.
Southwestern University, which shared last year's regular season conference title with Texas Lutheran at 11-5, received six of a possible 10 first-place votes to finish No. 1 in the poll. The Pirates are followed by Centenary College, the University of Dallas (one first-place vote), the University of St. Thomas (2), Schreiner University, Colorado College (1), Texas Lutheran University, Trinity University, Austin College and JWU Denver.
Under the direction of head coach Quintin Grogan, the Wildcats finished a game out of first place last year in their inaugural SCAC campaign with a league record of 10-6, in a three-way tie for third with Centenary and Dallas.
JWU will look to reload in 2019-20 after losing eight seniors, including the top two scorers in program history in Andrew Romero III and Jontrell Herman. The Wildcats will return four players from last year's squad in sophomores Gavin Spinks and Charles Young, junior Jalen Scandrett and senior Tim Leutritz. Grogan has added nine freshmen to the fold, a group that is expected to provide major contributions this season and one that combined for 38 points and 25 rebounds in JWU's exhibition on Friday at the University of Denver.
