Men's basketball drops conference opener to Southwestern

DENVER - The Johnson & Wales University men's basketball team opened SCAC play with a 90-66 loss to visiting Southwestern University on Sunday at the Wildcat Center. 

Freshman Jaerron Hunter scored a season-high 19 points to lead the Wildcats, including 17 in the first half. JWU Denver (1-7, 0-1) had two others in double figures as Brandon Romero had a season-high 14 off the bench while Andray Thomas Jr. finished with 11 points and nine rebounds.

Freshman Mason Beauman added seven points, nine rebounds and two steals for the the Wildcats, who were out-scored 32-16 in the paint and shot just 35.5 percent (22-62) from the field. 

Brandon Alexander scored 14 points and had five rebounds to lead the Pirates (6-3, 2-0), who began conference play 2-0 after beating Colorado College on Saturday. 

The Pirates shot 61.3 percent (19-31) from the floor in the first half to open up a 52-33 lead and finished with 10 made 3-pointers and 22-of-29 from the free-throw line.
