Men's basketball drops league matchup vs. Austin

DENVER - The Johnson & Wales University men's basketball team fell to visiting Austin College by a score of 96-77 on Saturday afternoon at the Wildcat Center.

The Wildcats (2-11, 1-5) struggled from the free throw line (16-for-31) and allowed the Roos (4-7, 1-3) to shoot 50.7 percent (34-of-67) from the field.

Freshmen Jaerron Hunter and Andray Thomas Jr. led the Wildcats with 21 points each while freshmen Ricky Poole and Kaleb Atherley added 10 apiece for JWU Denver.

Justice Mercadel scored 28 points and Devin Roland had 27 for the Roos, who jumped out to a 10-2 lead to start and never trailed in the SCAC contest.

While JWU struggled from the line and from the floor, Austin was efficient from both, including an 8-for-19 effort from behind the 3-point arc. The hot shooting translated to a 49-31 Austin lead at halftime and a 22-point advantage in the final minutes.

JWU returns to the Wildcat Center on Friday to host Colorado College (5:30 p.m.).
