Men's basketball comes up short at Trinity

SAN ANTONIO - The Johnson & Wales University men's basketball team came up short Friday in an SCAC road matchup at Trinity University, falling 80-64 at the William H. Bell Athletic Center.

Freshman Andray Thomas Jr. recorded his conference-leading fifth double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds, adding three assists and two steals for the Wildcats (2-13, 1-7). 

Freshman Kaleb Atherley posted his fifth double-digit rebound effort with a game-high 14 boards, including five on the offensive end, to go with seven points and two blocks. Sophomore Charles Young matched Thomas Jr. with 15 points, making 4-of-8 from 3-point range, and distributed a game-best seven assists. 

Freshman Jaerron Hunter added nine points and three assists while Brandon Romero, Shyreef Robins and Kade Glover each had six points. 

JWU Denver trailed 45-21 at halftime but rallied to make it an eight-point game on a pair of free throws by Robins with 5:18 to play. The Wildcats were unable to close the gap any closer and finished the night 6-for-13 at the free throw line with 17 turnovers and a 42-20 deficit in the paint. 

The Wildcats are back at it Saturday at Schreiner University (3 p.m.).
