KERRVILLE, TX - The Johnson & Wales University men's basketball team was unable to hold onto a three-point halftime lead Saturday night at Schreiner University, falling 84-76 to the host Mountaineers in an SCAC matchup at the Edington Center.
JWU Denver freshman Andray Thomas Jr. turned in yet another terrific individual performance for the Wildcats (2-14, 1-8) with 31 points and 15 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season.
Sophomore Charles Young added 16 points, four assist and two steals, and freshman Kaleb Atherley had 11 points and three boards for JWU. Freshman Brandon Romero finished with nine points and seven rebounds while freshman Jaerron Hunter dished out five assists.
JWU took its largest lead of the game six minutes in, leading by seven before settling for a 41-38 halftime edge. The teams traded the lead three times and were tied on four occasions in the second half.
Up one with 5:55 to play, the Mountaineers (5-10, 3-5) went on a 7-0 run to pull away for the victory. Schreiner's depth made a huge difference for the hosts as they outscored JWU's reserves 32-7.
JWU returns home to the Wildcat Center to hose St. Thomas on Friday (5:30 p.m.).
