Fernandez in line for top-10 finish at SCAC Championship

BLANCO, TX – After shooting two rounds in the 70s on Monday, Johnson & Wales junior Alex Fernandez (St. Johns, FL) is tied for eighth at the SCAC Men's Golf Championship tournament.

Fernandez shot 76-74 at Vaaler Creek Golf Club and is 6-over, nine shots back of the lead of Texas Lutheran's Colin Uecker (-2).

Monday marked the first time all season that Fernandez has carded two rounds in the 70s in the same tournament. Fernandez made four birdies on the day, two in each round. The junior birdied the par-5 8th both rounds along with the par-5 16th in Round 1 and par-5 4th in Round 2.

Fernandez's second round 74 tied for his best as a Wildcat, matching his score from the Wildcat/Cougar dual in the fall.

JWU Denver is in sixth place as a team with a total of 699. Dallas leads with a two-round total of 590.

Sophomore Manny Garcia (Lakewood, CO) is tied for 27th after a two round total of 167 (83-84).

Freshman Steven Gadient (Shelbyville, IN) is in 33rd individually at +43 after shooting 94 and 93. Classmate Andrew Thimjon (Hillsboro, OR) sits in 34th at +51 with a two-round total of 195 (96-99).

The championship will conclude with one 18-hole round on Tuesday.
