RISING SUN, Md. - Senior Alex Fernandez had himself a weekend to remember for the Johnson & Wales University men's golf team.
On Saturday Fernandez broke his own school record for the single-lowest round in team history with a 4-under 67. The senior from St. Johns, FL maintained his lead during Sunday's second and final round with a 2-over 73 to win the individual tournament championship at -2. Fernandez also shattered his previous team record for a two-round score with a tournament total of 140 to win by seven shots over Chris D'Alessandro of Arcadia.
Sophomore Steven Gadient also had his best tournament yet as a Wildcat, finishing 12th at +14 with total of 156 (75-81). Classmate Andrew Thimjon followed Gadient at +17 for the tournament with rounds of 74 and 85 for total of 159 to help the Wildcats place third as a team (302-315-617).
Junior Manny Garica helped the team's effort with a 27th place finish (86-77-163) while sophomore Matt Randall placed 36th (88-84-172).
The third-place performance capped the fall season on a high note for first-year coach Thomas Brennan's men's team.
