The Wildcats hosted University of Dallas on Friday night in a preview of a future conference matchup as the 'Cats prepare to move into the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference in the 2018-2019 academic year.
Coleton Threlkeld (Cypress, Texas) got the Wildcats on the board first in the fifth minute, taking a feed from Johnny Blottenberger (Baltimore, Md.). The 'Cats doubled their lead just a few seconds later as Shane Sapak (Monroe, Ct.) passed a ball to Gage Blottenberger (Severn, Md.) who put it past the Crusader's goaltender. Gage Blottenberger continued to roll for Johnson & Wales, scoring his second and third of the game within a span of 31 seconds as the 'Cats led 4-0. Threlkeld put up his second of the game with 4:25 left in the opening quarter as the Wildcats took a 5-0 lead into the second.
In the second quarter, Joshua Williamson (Horseheads, N.Y.) scored after the 'Cats cleared their defensive zone with JWU continuing to dominate. On the following faceoff, Deshaunte Longley (Bronx, N.Y.) won the draw and powered his way up the field to score the Wildcat's seventh goal of the game. The Crusaders got on the board with 11:33 left in the half on a man-up opportunity. With 7:35 left in the second quarter, Gage Blottenberger completed the sock trick, netting his sixth of the game. Johnson & Wales took a 10-3 lead into the break.
In the second half, University of Dallas altered their offensive game and cut into the Wildcat's lead. After three quarters, Johnson & Wales led 12-5. The Crusaders would go on to hold the 'Cats off the board in the final quarter as they came as close as four but the Wildcats held on for the 12-8 victory.
Gage Blottenberger led Johnson & Wales with six goals and Threlkeld added four more. Longley had nine ground balls for Johnson & Wales and won 13 of 16 faceoffs. Malachi Cunningham (Denver, Colo.) was a perfect 6 for 6 on faceoff opportunities. Evan Longinott (Wallkill, N.Y.) had eight saves for Johnson & Wales.
The Wildcats will wrap up their season next Saturday, April 22 when they host University of Wyoming at 2pm at Aurora Sports Park.
