DENVER – The Johnson & Wales University men's lacrosse team played its first SCAC game in program history on Saturday when the Wildcats hosted the Southwestern University Pirates.
Senior Kai Knight-Turcan scored five goals to lead the Pirates to a 30-3 victory at Aurora Sports Park.
SU (8-5) scored 11 unanswered goals in the first 10-plus minutes to establish control with four of those scores coming from Benjamin Libby.
Junior Matthew Sening (Centreville, VA) and senior Deshaunte Longley (Bronx, NY) scored back to back goals in the final minutes of the first quarter to cut into the Pirates' lead. Both JWU Denver (1-7) goals were unassisted and came in the span of 1 minute, 16 seconds.
The Wildcats were unable to close the gap any closer as the Pirates scored five straight to open the second frame to grab a 16-3 lead.
Junior Coleton Threlkeld (Cypress, TX) scored his team-leading ninth goal at the 6:50 mark of the second frame to cap the scoring in the contest for JWU.
SU was in control throughout, holding a 52-14 advantage in ground balls and going 30-for-36 in faceoffs.
Freshman Israel Trejo (Aurora, CO) led the Wildcats with five ground balls while Threlkeld and Longley totaled four shots each.
JWU returns to ASP on Saturday, April 6 to host Division II Colorado State University-Pueblo at noon.
