Wildcats finish as runner-up

The Wildcats hosted #24 Georgia Gwinnett College on Saturday in the Association of Independent Institutions Conference Championship match at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.

The Grizzlies tried to get the offense going early with a header by Andrew White but his shot went high. Mitchel Erickson (Pueblo West, Colo.) forced Lewis Sharpe, the GGC keeper, to made a save in the 18th minute. Jordan Collier (Plainfield, Ill.) was called into action in the 28th minute, saving a header attempt by Jumar Oakley. The Grizzlies got on the board in the 33rd minute with a goal from Oakley. Oakley had a ball crossed into the box and scored from four yards out past a diving Collier.

In the 38th minute, Josh Costello (Gold Coast, Australia) made Sharpe come up with a save as the 'Cats looked for the equalizer. In the 43rd minute, Dean Rounsevell (Port Macquarie, Australia) made a spectacular defensive save off an attempt by White to keep the game 1-0 headed into the break.

Collier opened the second half with a save in the 49th minute as the Grizzlies looked for an insurance goal. The 53rd minute saw an attempt by Christian Gallegos (Alvin, Texas) blocked in the box after a flurry of activity. Kyler Fowkes (Arvada, Colo.) made a defensive save for Johnson & Wales in the 59th minute as the whole squad continued to step up.

The Grizzlies added a second goal in the 73rd minute to go up 2-0 on Johnson & Wales and all but secure the win. JWU continued to press late but couldn't make up the deficit, falling to the Grizzlies and picking up the runner-up trophy in the process.

The Wildcats had four shots in the contest and Collier made two saves for Johnson & Wales. The Wildcats end their fourth season with a 9-7-4 record and their first-ever tournament trophy.
